High Relief Coins

The 2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Gold Coin was a culmination of the shared vision of President Theodore Roosevelt and sculptor Augustus Saint–Gaudens at the turn of the last century. When originally created in 1907, the minting process did not allow for the mass–production of ultra high relief coins. As a result, the most beautiful coin ever minted was not fully realized until 102 years later.

Through 21st century design and technology, the United States Mint was able to digitally map Saint–Gaudens’ original coin plasters and update his ultra high relief sculpture. These updates include the year “2009,” depicted in Roman numerals (MMIX); the addition of four stars to represent four additional states; and the addition of the inscription IN GOD WE TRUST, which was not on the 1907 version.

In 2015, the Mint produced a gold coin with a modernized version of Liberty. In 2017 and 2019 two additional versions followed. The series, which began in 2015, was internationally recognized for its bold 2017 design of a modern Liberty. This proud tradition continues in 2019 with the newest gold coin and silver medal!
