America's Military Events and Leaders, Part 1

Revolutionary War (1775-1783): George Washington, the 1st US President & commander-in-chief of the Continental Army, was appointed Lieutenant General (1798) & General of the US Armies (1976). John Adams, the 2nd US President, wrote the Navy's Code of Discipline and commissioned the first war ships. Thomas Jefferson, the 3rd US President, signed Congressional law, establishing the West Point military academy.
War of 1812 (1812-1815): James Madison, the 4th US President, was Commander-In Chief and James Monroe served as the Secretary of War before becoming the 5th US President. William Henry Harrison was a major general and subsequently the 9th US President. Zachary Taylor, was a military hero and subsequently the 12th US President. John Quincy Adams, the 6th US President, was crucial in negotiating the Treaty of Ghent, ending the War of 1812.
Mexican-American War (1846-1848): James K. Polk, the 11th President of the United States, was Commander-In Chief. Zachary Taylor was major general and subsequently became the 12th US President. Franklin Pierce rose to the rank of brigadier general and became the 14th US President. Ulysses S. Grant served as an army lieutenant and subsequently became the 18th US President of the United States
Civil War (1861-1865): Abraham Lincoln, the 16th US President, was the Commander-In Chief during the war and the Medal of Honor was first authorize in 1861. Ulysses S. Grant became the commanding general of the US forces and years later the 18th US President. James A. Garfield served as a major general and later became the 20th US President. Andrew Johnson, the 17th US President, was Commander-In Chief at the close of the war.
