As the King of American silver coins, the Silver Dollar has long held a special place in the hearts of numismatists. Large, heavy and by virtue of the Morgan dollar mintages, common enough that nearly everyone can afford a gem uncirculated example, a nice collection of Silver Dollars never fails to impress. As is the case with virtually all of the Date Sets in the Registry, difficult and age are almost directly related. The only really tough date is the inaugural 1794 issue. Of the original mintage of 1,758 pieces, slightly less than 10% or about 150 pieces are estimated to have survived - and fewer than a dozen of these are uncirculated. The remaining difficult coins are all basically in order of age, with the other Flowing Hair date, 1795, the Draped Bust Small Eagle type, and the Draped Bust Large Eagle types completing the majority of the keys. Not to be overlooked however are two very rare dates in the Liberty Seated Series: the 1851 and 1852. In the Morgan series, only the 1893 and 1895 are likely to provide a mild challenge. Even though there have been some significant gaps in the dollar coin series, a vast majority of the dates between 1795 and the present are quite affordable, and the resulting set will be most impressive.
