U.S. Half Dollars Complete Set with Major Varieties, Proof (1817-present)

Those attempting to collect a set of Proof Coins dated prior to 1856 should be prepared to be satisfied with obtaining only a few examples from these early years. Populations, when they exist at all, are usually under 5 pieces, and for almost all dates before 1825, PCGS has yet to certify a single piece! Like the Circulation Strike Date Set, rarity is mostly a function of age, and it is not until the late 1850s that quantities of Proofs exist. By the Barber series in 1892, most dates are readily available and of course, after 1950, nearly all are quite common.
