The short-lived Twenty Cent piece was ostensibly struck to help with the problem of a shortage of small change, but in reality did little to nothing to alleviate the situation. The public's confusion with the quarter was immediate, and after only two years, coinage for circulation was suspended. Proofs were struck for another two years. This small set is not excessively difficult to complete – except for one coin! The 1876-CC is one of the major United States rarities, as nearly the entire original mintage was melted in March, 1877. Some 18-20 pieces are believed to have survived. This set stands as a reminder that a coin sized too closely to the ubiquitous quarter dollar is doomed to failure – as witnessed a century later by the Anthony Dollar.

Notes: This set has bonuses. Please see the Set Composition for a listing.
