"Necessity is the mother of invention" and these coins are the best expression of that ancient axiom. These are token and private issues, used in most cases to promote commercial interests or to provide a small change where none existed. Some were commemorative in nature (the Rhode Island Ship medal); others were utilitarian (Chalmers silver coins and Texas Jolas); others were commercial (Talbot, Allum & Lee Cents and Myddleton tokens); and others were downright deceptive (Machin’s Mills). But, all are fun to collect! The challenge is to obtain as many different types in the best possible condition.
