Beneath it – date: 1852 – 1902 and mint mark 'G' (Karlsruhe). Reverse: The arms of the country with a so-called big eagle, above it – the German imperial crown; on a breast of an eagle – board with the arms of Prussia, around it – a Prussian award of the Black Eagle with a circuit. 03. Bavaria (Kingdom) Regent Luitpold's 90th birthday commemorative." This type was struck 1911 only but enough were saved that today it is only moderately scarce. It is accompanied by two and three mark pieces. King Otto's brother, Ludwig II, was deposed in 1886 and died a week later under very suspicious circumstances. Otto was also insane and was placed under Prince Luitpold's regency which lasted until his death in 1913. Recorded mintage: 160,000 plus proofs. Specification: 27.77 g, .900 fine silver. 06. Hesse-Darmstadt (Grand Duchy) Philip I, nicknamed der Großmütige ("the Magnanimous"), was the Landgrave of Hesse from 1509 to 1567 and a prominent individual of the Protestant Reformation. He was born on November 13, 1504, in Marburg, the only son of Landgrave William II (Wilhelm II; 1469–1509) and Landgravine Anna (1485–1525). For his contributions to politics and religion, his legacy has continued to be recognized. In 1904, Grand Duke Ernest Louis authorized a commemorative 2 mark coin, as well as a 5 mark piece, to be struck on the occasion of the 400th anniversary of Philip I's birth. Featured in the center of the obverse are left-facing busts of Grand Duke Ernest Louis and former Landgrave Philip I, the former displayed in the foreground and the latter shown in the midground.
