German New Guinea (now Papua New Guinea) was a German protectorate from 1884 to 1914, when Australia invaded the territory after Britain's declaration of war against Germany. In 1894 and 1895, the administrator of the territory, the Neu-Guinea Compagnie (New Guinea Company) issued a series of coins ranging in value from 1 Pfennig up to 20 Marks. All denominations above 2 Pfennig feature a Bird of Paradise (most likely the Emperor of Germany Bird of Paradise) and the coins are generally perceived as among the most beautiful ever produced. The proof versions are all scarce to rare, especially in the 5, 10, and 20 Mark denominations.
