The Mark and Pfennig denominations were the foundation of the German monetary system, with all other coins representing a fraction or a multiple of those values. From 1933 to 1939, Germany issued a 1 Mark piece made of nickel, as opposed to the silver pieces of earlier years. The 1 Mark denomination was discontinued in 1939 when the demand for nickel increased exponentially because of its strategic value in World War II. This set is very easy to complete and most of the coins can be found in high grade. Gems, however, are rare thanks to the sometimes poor striking qualities of the metal.
