Introduced in 2010, the Lincoln “Preservation of the Union” Cent, also known as the “Shield Cent” by many in the numismatic community, honors the preservation of the United States as a single and united country. The obverse of the Shield Cent features Victor David Brenner’s likeness of President Lincoln while the reverse depicts a union shield with a scroll draped across with the denomination of the coin, “One Cent,” in bold on the scroll. The 13 vertical stripes on the shield are meant to represent the states joined together in one union to support the federal government which is represented by the horizontal bar above the stripes on the shield.
