Fort Point Capped Bust Reeded Edge Half Variety Set
I love this series and have spent more than a decade seeking these out. Most examples I acquired "in the wild" unattributed, but certainly some well known dealers have played a role in helping me along the way, David Kahn most notably. Stack's Bowers Galleries also deserves special mention, without whom I would have definitely been at a significant disadvantage. Several coins also came from Dick Graham's collection when he sold.
My target grade for each variety is AU-58, though one example upgraded to low Mint State. Generally speaking, I'd rather a 58 than a low-MS coin, and I don't think I'm alone there. For type purposes, I own MS-63 examples, but (55) MS-63 Reeded Edge halves would be impractical for me from a financial standpoint. Because this is chiefly a variety set, some compromises have had to be made, and some rarer details-graded coins are a welcome addition.
Though this set shows I need 9 coins, I actually "need" less than 5. I've only put coins in this set that I'm happy with, or in some cases the coin I have is in a "collectible" holder from NGC or PCGS and I don't want to crack it just for the attribution that I already know.
There are several varieties within this series that have additional collectible die states or another unique factor that makes them also worth seeking out, though PCGS does not add complexity to this registry set by including them. One of these is the 1838 GR-8 with "greatly rotated dies". I recently acquired an example in full medallic alignment. Another interesting example I have is a piece certified by NGC as an 1837 GR-26, a controversial and disputed "new" die pair that PCGS does not recognize.
I also collect die states within these varieties; the coins listed here are just the highest graded examples I have for the basic variety, I likely have other die states in lower grades for most coins you see here in my collection. Sometimes I am stacked 4 or 5 deep on more common varieties with a cool die progression. Those coins are nearly never attributed on the holder, so don't show up in listed populations. I have grand plans of someday making a website with all my Reeded Edge halves available for viewing to bring light to this fascinating transitional series, but in the meantime I am busy experiencing and enjoying life immensely.
Thanks for viewing!
