关于此套币: Having reached my goal as of this writing 7/29/2009, placing # 14 in the all time finest list, # 9 current finest list, now time for the upgrades. Estimating a top tier set 11th or 12th all time finest and # 7 current finest. I feel it will be difficult placing better than 10th place, but not impossible. A favorite coin of mine always has been the MS Franklin in high grade, simply because the difficulty finding coins MS 65 or better. A coin this large made a perfect target for bag marks, nicks, scratches, and was destined to happen with the mints poor handling procedures. Mint sets did not fair not much better. Growing up finding them in circulation peaked my interest in these later years to assemble a high grade collection. The circulation finds never being any high grade coins and at best only worth melt at any given time. The goal for this set will be locating all coins grading at least MS 65, and having as many as possible MS 66 coins in "Original Old Green Holders", knowing this could be a challenge in itself. IM sure the "Old Green Holders" may also carry a premium for pristine examples. This set will contain a mixture of coins designated FBL (Full Bell Lines) as well as non FBL coins. Because of current inconsistencies with the TPG services (Third Party Grading) what designates true full bell lines, only coins with obvious deep bell lines will be added to this set. Emphasis on locating superb examples will be a priority in both FBL and non FBL coins. After numerous years researching auction archives, auction sales, having searched over fifty thousand PCGS slabbed coins, it is (my) estimate total surviving population of the "Old Green Holders" about 3% - 5% (in most every series). Also I estimate "maximum" population of the PCGS OGHs about 10 to 12% include coins in Registry collections and dealer inventories, but feel this number is high. It is safe to say an average "estimate" is 6 to 8%. However the research points to lower numbers of 3-5% and feel these numbers are more accurate. After years of collectors "cracking out" coins in hopes of upgrades has diminished the OGH population significantly. This adding to the difficulty, completing an all "Old Green Holder Set" in many different series. Finding the highest graded coins will make building this collection even more challenging. This set will be a continuing process upgrading with only "white" or "spectacular" toned coins, passing on pieces lacking what I consider having true "eye appeal". Currently available on the market has been the opportunity to purchased numerous MS 66 FBL coins in "Blue Holders", assembling a high grade "Blue Holder Set" would be a much easier task. Time and time again while building this set I have come upon many MS 66 FBL, non FBL and a few MS 67 coins in Blue Holders. Wishing some of the pieces seen were in the OGH. Literally passing on many of the best ever seen Franklins in Blue Holders, only the OGH coins will be considered as an addition to this set. Having some difficulty finding what I consider "eye appealing" coins in the OGHs, even passing on many having the "grade" but lacking the "look" wanted for this set. Two small highlights of this collection are the 1953 D MS 65, this coin is in a Very Rare Pre OGH "Doily" rumored production for this "cert type" was for just six short months, produced from August of 1989 to January of 1990, with conflicting reports produced only in the month of December 1989. This "cert" getting it`s name from the Doily looking background. Still a very rare "cert type". Also the 1957 D MS 66 in an Old Green Rattler, a rare combination, one of three verified in an OGH. Included are two coins additionally certified by CACs exacting standards with green stickers the 1949 S and the 1954 S stating agreement with PCGS of the assigned grade. Three beautiful toned coins include the 1956, 1957, and 1958 all grading MS 66. Finally, the goal having this collection placing in the top 20 Non Full Bell Lines sets of all time, all coins in OGHs.

Thank you very much for the compliment. It has been more challenging than I expected finding pristine coins for this collection. After the final coin was added to this set I jumped to # 14 on the all time finest list. Happy with that now will be time to do a few upgrades exchanging out coins for ones with more eye appeal. But overall very satisified with my results. Prices for nice examples in OGHs do for the most part bring more money than the same coin in a Blue Holder.

An interesting trend as prices continue to fall in this series the OGH coins were bringing more than price guide prices. That has not been the case lately as even those coins continue to drop in prices at auction.

Where prices were falling they are now falling across the board. It is the time to be a buyer for assembling a high grade set of Franklins. Prices are right.

An interesting note with many prices falling in different series, the MS Franklins in OGH seem to be increasing in auction prices.
