The 1722 Rosa Americana Penny with GEORGIUS obverse and VTILE DVLCI reverse is a rare variety that should not be confused with the rarer GEORGIVS obverse used with the same VTILE DVLCI reverse. On this coin both U’s and V’s are used in the legend while the rarer variety uses V’s in all cases for U’s. There are many different varieties of 1722 Rosa Americana Pennies but this is the only one that uses both U’s and V’s in the legends all others use either all V’s or all U’s. It seems that William Wood had many dies made for his Rosa Americana coinage yet there seem to be few common varieties of any of his issues.

While the Rosa Americana coinage was a private issue, it was authorized by King George I for use in North American and as such is earliest coinage so universally issued for the American colonies. It is also the first to use “Rosa Americana”, a legend that refers to America as an entity.

Although the 1722 Rosa Americana Penny with VTILE DVLCI reverse is a rare coin, there are a number of high grade examples available to collectors.
