The 1747 Machin's Mills Halfpenny is a fraudulent (but highly collectible) coin made in the late 1700's and backdated to 1747 to limit the scrutiny it might have otherwise received from anyone who obtained it in circulation. The weight is below that of a standard British Halfpenny and that difference was the profit to the coiner. These, along with other back-dated and contemporary issues, were produced at facilities belonging to Thomas Machin -- hence their name. Thirty-eight different varieties are known among all the Machin's Mills coins, plus four that have been delisted. They represent a relatively obscure area in American numismatics, but there are many collectors who absolutely love them.
Among the 1747 Machin's Mills issues, there is only one variety. It is considered to be a Rarity 5 (Very Rare) and none are klnown above EF45.
