1793 C3 Liberty Cap half cent, hooked bust line, R3. This is the front-line example for the Furnace Run PCGS Registry Set of US half cents from 1793 to 1857 by Cohen Variety. This coin has been authenticated and graded by PCGS as VF25, and CAC-certified as a CHOICE example. This is a well-known example that was purchased out of the Goldberg's sale of the Whister Collection, where it was described as: "1793 C-3 R3 F15. Very attractive glossy chocolate brown with slightly lighter chocolate toning in protected areas on both sides. The planchet is smooth and the surfaces are virtually flawless. The best identifying marks are a tiny rim nick at TE in STATES and a barely visible rim bruise at the E in AMERICA, but these imperfections are trivial. The eye appeal of this piece is truly exceptional for the grade. MDS (there are no significantly different die states for this variety). Struck very slightly off center to K-9 and the reverse is rotated 10 degrees clockwise from a perfect head-to-foot die orientation. Noyes photo #73600. Weight 102.0 grains." This coin was lot 3 and sold as a raw example for $13,225. It is now housed in the PCGS VF25 CAC holder, and the "Cohen 3" variety and "Furnace Run Collection" attributions are each listed on the PCGS label. This is truly an exceptional coin, one of the nicest 1793 half cents I have handled, CHOICE by anybody's standard. Extensively pedigreed back to 1955. Ex R. L. Rarity: Scarce

Variety Equivalents: Gilbert 1, Breen 3

Notes:
As with all 1793 Half Cent varieties, this is a relatively scarce one.  Most examples are circulated, they are all valuable, and finding a problem-free example is difficult.  At least six Mint State examples are known, the finest of which is the Gem Uncirculated PCGS MS65BN example from the Missouri Cabinet (illustrated above).  No Red-Brown or Red examples exist of the 1793 Cohen 3, though the Missouri Cabinet coin, with its traces of original mint red, comes very close.

The obverse die of this variety was also used on 1793 Cohen 4.

The reverse die of this variety was also used on 1793 Cohen 2.
