Sheldon 38 is one of the 1794 "Head of 1794" varieties.  It is currently considered to be Rarity 5 (between 45 and 60 known).  The obverse is known as the "Marred Field" because of raised die chips that appear in the lower left field on the obverse (this same die was used on several other Large Cent varieties).

High grade examples are very rare.  The best example is a PCGS MS63BN -- the only Mint State example believed to exist of this varoety.  The next best example is at least ten points lower.  No Red-Brown or Red examples are known, and their existence is highly doubtful.  However, since the best S-38 was discovered in England many years ago, hope springs eternal.
