The 1794 Half Dime was the first year that this denomination was made inside the new United States Mint, thus this date carries a premium with type collectors. The 1794 Half Dime has a low mintage and is very scarce in all conditions. However, a number of nice, high-grade examples have survived, including a few Gems.

Around 1880, coin dealer William Elliot Woodward from Massachusetts discovered a hoard of about 100 Half Dimes from 1794 and 1795 in Uncirculated condition. If we look at the current PCGS Population totals, there are dozens of Uncirculated examples for the 1794 Half Dime and over 100 Uncirculated examples of the 1795 Half Dimes. Many of these examples may have survived from the 1880's Woodward hoard.
