The following information was related to me by David Perkins in an email on 3/25/2009:

"First of all, the 1795 B-6 with “three leaves under the first S in STATES [hereafter noted as B-6 (3)] was reported in The Numismatist as 1795 B-18, discovered by Frank M. Stirling.  This exact coin is photographed in the article...I have always used B-6 and B-18 for describing this die marriage, as has everyone else I know or have studied.

Two years ago at the EAC / JRCS Convention in St. Louis, I brought and displayed all of the die marriages that shared the obverse and reverse dies, along with my B-6 (3).  John D[annreuther] and other numismatists and early dollar specialists looked at and studied all of the dollars.  Having all the uses of the die side by side was necessary to determine the emission sequence.  Consistent with your reaction, early on John D. stated a few times that he thought it was a new die, not a reworked die, as did a couple others.   I even showed it to Harry Salyards (see footnote in Bowers book – his theory on this B-6 (3) proved incorrect.  After studying it closely, we concluded the leaf was added to the die, some of the stems and other devices were strengthened.  Others there confirmed this also.
