1796 C1 Liberty Cap half cent, No Pole, R6. This is the front-line example for the Furnace Run PCGS Registry Set of US half cents from 1793 to 1857 by Cohen Variety. This coin has been authenticated and graded by PCGS as FR2, and it's an excellent, original, low grade example of this ultra-rarity. Very hard to find this variety at all, let alone in a problem-free low grade holder - it's much easier to find a mint state example, in fact! This coin was last sold in a Heritage auction where it realized $22,800 and was described as: "1796 1/2 C No Pole, C-1, B-1, R.6, Fair 2 PCGS. The bust of Liberty is fully outlined with LIBERTY partially readable and the date faint but fully visible. The reverse detail is partially evident. All genuine 1796 No Pole half cents have a prominent bisecting die crack from 3 o'clock to 9 o'clock on the obverse. Due to the low grade of this example, that bisecting crack is not discernable in its entirety, but a trace of the crack remains visible at Liberty's upper lip just below the nose. This is an extremely important opportunity for the advanced collector to obtain a rarity in the early half cent series. Our EAC grade Fair 2." The bisecting obverse die crack is only faintly visible, but fortunately all 4 digits of the date are easily readable in hand, and the coin is simple to attribute as Cohen 1. Really a great opportunity for an "affordable" PCGS-graded 1796 C1 No Pole half cent. The "C-1 No Pole" variety and "Furnace Run Collection" pedigree are each listed on the PCGS label. Ex-Loma Linda Collection; Heritage 02/22/18:3699:$22800; Shawn A. Yancey #11902; Furnace Run collection.
