The 1796 $10 gold piece is an inherently rare coin, thanks in large part to a miniscule mintage of just over 4,100 pieces. The 1796 is at least three times as rare as the 1795 and it is much more diffcult to find a Mint State example of the 1796. Only one die pair was used for this year, thus there is no competition among different die varieties, as collectors only need one variety of this date.
The most common certified grade for this date is AU55 and the greatest part of the population falls into a range that goes from AU50 to AU58. Just over a dozen Mint State examples are known, with MS63 being the top grade for this date.

The mintage of the 1796 is only about one-fourth less than that of the 1795, but this date is twice as rare as the 1795 in all grades. Extremely Fine and Almost Uncirculated specimens are the average quality available but a small number of uncirculated pieces are also known, several of which have prooflike surfaces and are sufficiently well struck that they may have been presentation pieces. Although the 1795 admittedly has the added popularity from being the first year of issue, in my opinion the 1796 is very undervalued in comparison.PCGS #
