1797 C3b Liberty Cap half cent, Low Head with Lettered Edge, R4. This is the front-line example for the Furnace Run PCGS Registry Set of US half cents from 1793 to 1857 by Cohen Variety. This coin has been authenticated and graded by PCGS as VG10, and this is a lovely example of a variety that usually comes with problems. In fact, this is one of my favorite varieties - when I started out several years ago I started trying to find one of these, and it was a real challenge. I was eventually able to find more than a dozen examples, but almost all of them were either low grade, ugly, or BOTH! So I developed a really clear picture early on of what the population of 1797 C3b really looked like, and with that knowledge, I can tell you that this example is exceptional, especially for the grade. This coin was lot #12199 in the Stacks auction of 03/30/16, where it sold for $3995 and was described as: "Deep olive brown with no defects worthy of mention aside from perhaps a very faint old scratch on the reverse that can only be seen under good magnification. The obverse is essentially flawless for the grade and smooth, making for an excellent first impression. Possibly struck over a defective large cent that has been cut down. The reverse shows evidence of the undertype in the upper right wreath, and the artifacts seem to be elements of a larger wreath, though there is little that can be discerned with certainty. A bit unevenly struck with peripheral weakness through STATES OF AMER, but this is the reason that traces of the undertype are visible at all and the feature is certainly not unusual. A lovely example for the grade." Well said! Early die state M1.0; perfect obverse, light crack from leaf below E in UNITED. I challenge you to find a nicer 1797 C3b for the grade - I couldn't! From the Henry Mitchell collection; Stacks 03/30/16:12199:$3995; unknown; Shawn A. Yancey #12024; JRB; Shawn A. Yancey #12047; Furnace Run Collection.
