Sheldon 147 is one of the tough, First Hairstyle varieties of 1798. Breen calls it Rarity 5 (46-60 known). This variety was struck on poor-quality blanks provided by William Coltman. Thus, most examples of S-147 are dark, pitted, or otherwise defective. The finest example is a recently graded PCGS AU55 that tops the PCGS Condition Census, the Noyes Census, and would have been the best example in Breen's Census had he been aware of it (the coin was discovered on eBay circa 2006, six years after the publication of his Encyclopedia).
A diagnostic feature for S-147 can be found on the fraction, which is so pushed so far to the right that the final 0 almost touches the ribbon.
