The 1798/7 Dime with 6 stars on the reverse is an unusual case of die usage. First, the obverse die, which was leftover from 1797 and overdated with an 8 that was much too small. Why a tiny 8 was used is unknown, but the appearance of the overdate prompted Walter Breen to proclaim it the reason that engraver Robert Scot often omitted the final digit in the dies to avoid overdating. Likewise, the reverse is unusual because it was the same one used to strike 1807 Quarter Eagles!
Mint State 1798/7 16 Stars Reverse Dimes are rare but not overly scarce. The PCGS CoinFacts Condition Census starts at MS64 and goes up to MS65. The finest example appears to be the PCGS MS65+ from the Eric P. Newman Collection, though there are three PCGS MS65s that might compare favorably.
