The BD-2 variety of the 1801 Eagle ($10) is a surprisingly common coin, especially considering the cost of preserving such a high, face-value coin over the past 200+ years (at a time when Mint workers were happy to earn $1 a day, it is clear that putting aside any of these coins was a significant investment). PCGS alone has certified over 500 1801 Eagles, most of which are of the BD-2 variety. We are aware of scores of Mint State examples, and almost twenty of the BD-2's grade MS64 or better. The best examples are a trio of MS65's, led by the D, Brent Pogue collection that sold for $217,375 in 2015 and was being offered in early 2016 for $285,000.
The overall strike quality for this date is excellent, though some of the obverse stars are sometimes weak.
