David Akers (1975/88)

The 1801 has the highest mintage of any of the early Eagles and it is the second most common date after the 1799. Specimens exist in all grades and choice and gem uncirculated examples are comparatively available.

The beauty and popularity of these early Eagles, rather than their rarity, account for the high prices they realize in comparison to issues in the Liberty Head type. With few exceptions, any Liberty Head Eagle prior to 1879 is more rare, especially in mint state, than this date, the 1799, and most other early Eagles for that matter.
