The Sheldon-251 1803 Large Cent features a small 3 in the date and a small fraction on the reverse.  Identification of this variety is easy because the fraction bar is the shortest of any of the 1803 varieties; the final S of STATES is repunched, and the M of AMERICA is repunched.  Only S-251 has these three attribution points.

S-251 is a common variety but, like most 1803s, it is rare in Mint State.  One of the finest examples is the one George Clapp donated to the American Numismatic Society.  The next-best collectible example is the PCGS MS64BN ex Stickney, Newcomb - Clarke - Naftzger, sold by the Goldbergs in 2008.  No Red-Brown or Red examples are known of the S-251.
