1804 C8 Draped Bust half cent, Spiked Chin, R1. This is the front-line example for the Furnace Run PCGS Registry Set of US half cents from 1793 to 1857 by Cohen Variety. This coin has been authenticated and graded by PCGS as EF45, and CAC-certified as CHOICE for the assigned grade. A sharp, glossy, extremely attractive coin with a great pedigree. This is actually the Cohen plate coin (page 52) as well as the Cohen collection coin. As an added bonus, this is a cool late die state (LDS) example, M6.0 with retained cud extending above LIBE and reaching the left top of R. This coin last traded in the Davy collection part II sold by Goldberg's on 09/04/11. In that sale, this coin was lot #247 where Bob Grellman described it as: "1804 C-8 R1 Spiked Chin EF40. Glossy chocolate brown with steel and light olive brown toning on the highpoints. Frosty flowline luster shows in protected areas, especially on the reverse. The only marks are a few small ticks on the portrait, none significant. LDS, Manley state 6.0, with a raised retained cud connecting LIBE to the rim. This attractive piece is plated in the second edition of the Cohen half cent book (page 52) to illustrate what he calls the "Broken Obverse" die state. The "Spiked Chin" is obvious. Davy #04.8.23." Ex-Ex J. J. Teaparty-Roger S. Cohen, Jr., Superior 2/2/1992:188; Davy Collection; Goldberg's 09/04/11:27:$747.50; Shawn A. Yancey #9523 12/01/11; Furnace Run Collection.
