When Henry William DeSaussure became the new director of the Mint, he sought to improve the designs of circulating coinages. Designer Robert Scot was put to the task, furnished with a sketch of Mrs. Anne Willing Bingham by Gilbert Stuart. Said to be the most beautiful woman of her day, Mrs. Bingham was also a most influential member of high society. Indeed, it has been written that George Washington felt fortunate to be included in HER social circle! Undoubtedly Scot felt the pressure of his situation and produced the lovely draped bust cent design as a fitting tribute.-------------------------------------------------------**First struck in 1796, Draped Bust cents continued in production through 1807. A subtle change was made to the design in 1798, with Miss Liberty's hair curls given a fresh treatment. This second style is the most noticeable by the addition of an extra hair curl at the back of Liberty's shoulder. The collection includes examples of both styles, each in extraordinary gem red-brown condition.---**First up is Style 1, represented here by the MS65RB specimen of the 1796 S-93 draped bust cent from the Naftzger, Whitney and Husak collections. Simply amazing for a 1796 cent, this coin is listed by EAC expert Del Bland as the single finest 1796 cent in his census.----------------------------**Next we have Style 2, here represented by the monster MS66RD specimen of the 1807 S-273, the sole MS66RD example graded by PCGS for the entire Draped Bust type.
