1809/6 C5 Classic Head half cent, 9 Over Inverted 9, R1. This is the front-line example for the Furnace Run PCGS Registry Set of US half cents from 1793 to 1857 by Cohen Variety. This coin has been authenticated and graded by PCGS as AU55, and this coin faces up as an UNC with glossy chocolate brown color with golden luster showing underneath on both sides. In fact, my consignor purchased this coin as a raw MS60+. It certainly has the look of a much higher grade, but I do see some wear on the highest points of the hair, so the PCGS assessment is spot-on. Both sides are nearly mark-free but a strong glass does reveal some minor nicks on the obverse, and I mean MINOR. This is an early-die state example with the 9 Over Inverted 9 feature clear. M1.0 with crack rim stars 4-6; dentilation mostly strong; rust pit beneath second A in AMERICA. Purchased from Dr. Eugene Bruder in 2010; Furnace Run collection.
