1810 $5 Small Date, Tall 5 MS61 认证号04841215, PCGS号8106

专家评论

David Akers (1975/88)

This is a very underrated coin and is at least 2-3 times as rare as the 1810 Large Date, Large 5. It is also substantially more rare than the 1807 Bust Left, 1809/8 or 1812. It is also rarer than either of the 1811 coins or the 1808, making it the fourth rarest coin of this type. The coin's rarity has never really been appreciated.

1810 Half Eagles are one of the more interesting dates in the series because of the unusual combination of date and denomination sizes and shapes.  Though only four varieties comprise the entire output of this date, each is different enough that there is no "normal" 1810 Half Eagle, though both the Small Date and the Tall 5 are of the style of previous years.  The Small Date, Tall 5 variety is the second most common of the four die varieties.  According to John Dannreuther, THE expert on early U.S. gold varieties, the Small Date, Tall 5 was struck on two different occasions based on die evidence.

Numerous Mint State examples exist of the 1810 Small Date, Tall 5 Half Eagle -- enough that the PCGS CoinFacts Condition Census starts at MS63.  At least two Gem examples are known, one being the PCGS MS65 formerly of the D. Brent Pogue collection.
