Among the 1814 Dimes, the JR-1 variety is the only one with a Small Date. The easiest way to differentiate the Small and the Large Date varieties is to examine the 8 of the date. On the Small 8 variety, the 8 is no taller than the 1s on either side; on the Large Date variety, the 8 is much larger than on the Small Date variety and is taller than either of the 1s.
All 1814 Small Date Dimes show softly struck (or flat) stars and weak denticles. Late states of the reverse die show a cud developing over the CA of AMERICA.
Mint State examples are scarce, with approximately a dozen known. The price record for this variety belongs to a Gem Brilliant Uncirculated examples from the Samuel Wolfson Collection that sold for $80,500 in 2006.
