B-2 High R-5 Robert Scot's great skeleton in the closet. Very rare! Only 14 coins certified by PCGS and none by either service in 12,15 or 20. PCGS has only one in XF and none in AU. Browning wrote, "The engraver evidently mistook the die for that of a 50 cent piece, then corrected the error." He actually ended up punching the 5 too low into the dentils.Once he relized he made the mistake he tryed to remove the error as much as possible and then punching the correct numerals to fix it. It is believed through various observations that the die was actually engraved in 1818. Six years later the second chief engraver William Kneass again resurrected the same reverse die in 1828. A possible deliberate act of economy. Walter Breen's comments are that Kneass could blame it on his late predecessor and excuse its exhumation on grounds of economy. This coin was Purchased from Harry Laibstain rare coins, October 30, 2009.

Two die varieties comprised the entire mintage of the 1822 Quarter Dollars: one variety is the 25/50C and the other shows a normal denomination.  The Blundered Denomination occurred when the die sinker punched a "50" into the die instead of a "25", thus creating and undersized, new "Half Dollar."  The error was caught and corrected, but the underlying 50 remained visible, and little or no efforts were made to efface it.  Based on die evidence, researcher and author Steve Tompkins concluded that the Blundered Denomination resulted from a die left over from 1818.  The Blundered Denomination appears to be two to three times as scarce as the normal reverse.

As might be expected, Mint State examples of the Blundered Denomination are quite rare.  We know of five Mint State examples, ranging in grade from PCGS MS61 to PCGS MS65+.

A tough one to find in any grade, and in great demand by both "Red Book" collectors and Bust Quarter vasriety specialists. The Eliasberg gem brought $184,000 in Heritage 4/09:2323. High-grade examples are extremely rare: only eight are known above VF.
