All known 1823 Capped Head Half Eagles are struck from one die pair, using a fresh obverse for 1823 mated with a workhorse Large Letters reverse first employed for 1820 BD.9, then used to strike all of the half eagles from 1821 through 1824.

While 1823 Half Eagles are rare as an issue, with estimates of no more than 100 or so survivors in all grades combined, they live in a bit of a tough neighborhood, among many of the great rarities of American Numismatics. So, in comparison to the other dates of the 1820s, 1823 Half Eagles are seen as relatively common.

The finest known 1823 Half Eagle is likely Norweb:774, now in the Harry Bass Core Collection. The second finest, and finest certified is the Henry Miller PCGS MS65, followed by the Naftzger-Pogue PCGS MS64+ in third place.

The 1823 Half Eagle is known by only one die variety: BD-1 (Breen 1-A).  This is a relatively scarce date, with an estimated 100 survivors.  Despite the low survival rate, several choice to near-Gem examples are known.

The 1823 is a very rare coin but it is still one of the more "common" dates of this type, and certainly the most available date between 1821 and 1829. When 1820 is considered just as a date and the Curved Base 2 and Square Base 2 varieties are not broken out, the 1823 is more rare than the 1820, as well as the 1813, 1814/3 and 1818. There are a few well circulated 1923's around but most known specimens are AU or better. A number of very choice uncs are also known, perhaps as many as 25-30 pieces.
