All 1824 Dimes are overdates, with a clear 2 visible under the 4.  Two die varieties can be found in this year, both sharing the same obverse die, but different reverse dies.  The first variety (JR-1) is very common; the second variety (JR-2) is very rare.

The JR-2 variety was discovered in 1982 by collector H. Roland Willasch, who noted that the 1824 Dime that he had owned for some ten years was different from one that he had just purchased.  The new variety was confirmed by variety specialst Jules Reiver and presented to the public via the June 2, 1982 issue of COIN WORLD.

Collector/researcher James Koenings published a book in 2010 dedicated to the 1824 JR-2 Dimes, where he illustrated 33 different examples and listed seven additional examples (which may be possible duplicates of the ones he illustrated).  The finest example has an estimated grade of XF45.  According to Koenings' research, 75% of the known 1824 JR-2 Dimes grade Very Good or worse!

Here are two quick tips to determine if you have the rare 1824 JR-2 Dime:

JR-1: Flat top 1 in the denomination, ERI of AMERICA separated

JR-2: Pointed top 1; ERI joined.
