The Newcomb 9 variety of 1835 Large Cents is a scarce variety which, by itself, is slightly significant, but no more so than any of the other Rarity 4 Large Cent varieties. However, Newcomb 9 is very rare in Mint State and the best seen is only a single PCGS MS63BN. Where this variety really becomes interesting is in the terminal die state. Most die varieties span a narrow range of die states, starting with perfect dies, then exhibiting some die cracks before the die was eventually retired. Not so with Newcomb 9. The latest strikes of Newcomb 9 exhibit a big cud on the right side of the obverse from 2-2:30. Similarly, the reverse shows a long, narrower cud running from 2:30-4:30 on the right side. On the finest known terminal die state (PCGS AU55), the strike is so bad that the coin lacks many of the stars, legends, and design details. But to collectors who love die states, this is one of the most attractive and desirable coins in the entire Middle Date series.
No Red-Brown or Red examples are known of the 1835 Newcomb 9 variety.
