Among the Capped Bust 1837 Half Dimes are two major varieties: Large 5 and Small 5. Four die varieties comprise the Large 5 major variety. Among those is the LM-1 variety, which is very common. Most LM-1's show a die crack running from the obverse edge near 12:00 down through the cap. One might think this was enough to retire the die, but there are numerous survivors with this inherent flaw.
The PCGS CoinFacts Condition Census shows approximately eight different Mint State examples, and we suspect that a careful examinaton of auction records will reveal more. To our knowledge, the PCGS MS66 1837 LM-1 from the Heritage 4/2010 auction (Lot 468) is the finest known example.
