The 1842 Second Restrike Half Cent is a Proof-only version of a date that never appeared in circulation.  Restrikes were made on more than one occasion to provide coins to collectors of dates that would have otherwise been extremely rare.  However, total demand for these coins in the 1850's and 1860's was very small and certainly miniscule by today's standards.  Thus, Richard Coleman, a modern researcher, could find only thirteen different examples of the Second Restrike (and only 17 First Restrikes).

The Second Restrike is also known as the "Reverse of 1840" and is characterized by a series of file marks between the denticles on the reverse and the ICA of AMERICA.  This contrasts with the First Restrikes which show obvious recutting of the T of CENT.

The finest 1842 Second Restrike Half Cent is the PCGS PR66+BN from the D. Brent Pogue Collection, which sold in 2017 for a record $18,800.
