Briggs Variety 3-C, per his "The Comprehensive Encyclopedia of United States Liberty Seated Quarters" Obverse - Large date, stars sharp on left soft on right Reverse - Small mint mark located half way along arrow feather and tilted right. All vertical shield lines extend into horizontal lines with vertical line #1 extending up to horizontal line #6. Vertical lines #4,6,7,8 and 10 extend below shield line. Die chip or lump between "IC" of "AMERICA". He also suggests that the rarity is R4+ for XF/AU grades which would put the estimated survival of XF/AU at between 50 and 100. This estimate seems spot-on with the current graded population of XF/AU by PCGS and NGC at 80 including resubmissions.

To determine whether you have a Large Date 1842-O quarter or the rarer Small Date version, just look at the 8 in the date. The Large Date has larger figures and the bottom of the 8 is slightly BELOW the base of the adjacent 1. The Small Date version utilizes smaller numeral punches and the bottom of the 8 is ABOVE the baseline of the adjacent 1 and 4.
