Proof 1844 Silver Dollars are extremely rare.  Experts have estimated that as many as fifteen examples many be known, but we have found only five distinct examples plus as many as four more possibilities.    Most of the known examples are brilliant Proofs, but a few are Cameos.  No Deep Cameo Proofs are known.

John Jay Pittman's example was part of a complete 1844 silver and minor proof set housed in an original moroccan leather case from which the gold coins had been removed.  According to researcher Saul Teichman, this set was once part of the Col. E.H.R. Green estate.  B.G. Johnson sold the set for $285 to R. Green (no relation to Col. Green) on 7/1943.  Green offered the set in the May 1944 issue of The Numismatist for $550.  Years later (in 1948), Pittman purchased the set for $400, a substantial discount from Green's asking price.  In 2008, Heritage sold Pittman's Proof 1844 Dollar for $83,375 (all by itself).
