The 1845 Half Dime is extremely rare, with fewer than ten examples known. Eric Newman's example came from a complete, cased 1845 Proof set formerly owned by Col. E.H.R. Green. John Jay Pittman purchased his in the the 1950 "Adolphe Menjou" sale and used it to rebuild an 1845 Proof set (including the gold). Louis Eliasberg and Eugene Gardner both owned Gem examples. Others exist, but they rarely appear on the market.
The best Proof 1845 Half Dime is an NGC PR68 -- that coin realized a record $92,000 in 2008, but sold for almost a third less when it reappeared in 2014.

Eric Newman’s 1845 Proof coins were accompanied by a presentation case with gilt lettering “EDWARD PEASE FROM JOHN PEASE”. The case contained spaces for ten coins: Half Cent, One Cent, Half Dime, Dime, Quarter Dollar, Half Dollar, Silver Dollar, Quarter Eagle, Half Eagle, and Eagle. The set came from the Col. E.H.R. Green collection and was handled by Burdette G. Johnson. On 10/3/1946, Johnson offered the complete 10-piece set to Jacob Shapiro (”J.F. Bell) for $1,500, but Shapiro declined. On 1/2/1947, Johnson tried again, offering Shapiro the three gold coins from the set for $1,100. This time, Shapiro took the deal. Eric Newman purchased the remaining non-gold proof coins and the case for an undisclosed sum.
