Four obverse and reverse dies have been identified for 1849 business strike coinage while a separate obverse die is known for proof coinage.

In Mint State, this date is very scarce and will prove to be difficult to locate.

For a Dime in the 1840's, the 1849 has a relatively high mintage, thus it is priced only slightly above a normal type coin in most grades.  Mint State examples are semi-scarce, but they tend to be on the low end of the grade scale (MS62 is the most frequently-seen grade).  Gems are actually quite rare.  The PCGS CoinFacts Condition Census starts at MS64 and only the top six coions are MS65 or better.  The very best 1849 Dime is the colorful PCGS MS67 (illustrated above) that sold in a 2015 Heritage sale for a record $39,550.
