Unique. Cincinnati Mining & Trading Company is one of the great rarities of the entire Pioneer Gold series, with only THREE examples in private hands of any of the gold issues. The present example is unique as a uniface reverse die trial, and the finest of the three known $20 patterns. Essentially as made, with hints of red and copious die polish.

This unusual piece is a copper die trial of the reverse die intended for use on the 1849 Cincinnati Mining and Trading Company Twenty Dollar gold piece.  The strike is slightly off-center towards 12 o'clock and the die was out of parallel with the planchet, resulting in a strong impression at the bottom and a weak impression at the top.  This piece is unlisted in Kagin's "Private Gold Coins and Patterns of the United States" and has been assigned the desigation Kagin "2a" because of its similarity to the double-sided copper die trial (K-2).  This piece came through PCGS in March 2015 and is believed to be unique.
