1850 Braided Hair half cent, R2. This is the front-line example for the Furnace Run PCGS Registry Set of US half cents from 1793 to 1857 by Cohen Variety. This coin has been authenticated and graded by PCGS as MS63BN, and it is a dark and glossy, sharply-struck example with attractive undertones of maroon and blue. Take a look at the Coinfacts photo - it really shows the great colors very well, whereas my photos do not. 1850 has emerged as the key date for the Braided Hair half cent series, especially in higher grades, and this one is certainly a nice example. Not really sure why it did not sticker at CAC, but I am going to guess it would be the darker chocolate color. Take a look at the 1849 in this collection - not nearly as nice in terms of luster, strike, eye appeal, and toning, yet that 1849 got a CAC sticker and this one didn't, and I think it's because the 1849 is peanut butter and this 1850 is dark chocolate. I digress - that is my own opinion, take a look at the photos for each coin and form your own! Bottom line is that this 1850 is a very attractive, sharply-struck example with pretty underlying toning. Ex-Barry Lame in 2011 for $2800 as NGC MS63BN; Furnace Run collection.
