The 1850 Date is one that is extremely common in any grade better than VF and Gems are noticeably easy to find due to the occurrences of several hoards. Color of course is always a challenge. This particular piece does not have any known pedigree but at a lofty MS66BN it does claim the PCGS Top Pop for N21 and is the plate image coin for the listing. It is possibly that this coin came from a hoard that Abe Kosoff handled sometime ago, as was suggested to me by Bob Grellman. The piece was originally housed in an NGC holder and PCGS had no qualms about claiming this lovely piece as worthy of their own plastic. The surfaces are rather impeccable and flecked with bits of original fading red and medium satin brown. The reverse makes a case for a RB and is only flawed by a tiny pinscratch in the upper right night next to the ribbon. In any case it is truly a marvelously coin, cared for and treasured by 5 generations of collectors. It should also be noted that the coin is also in the Terminal state and CUDS are easily noticed on the reverse rim.
