Mintage: 510,000
Obverse Dies: 4 Known

1850 New Orleans dimes are found with three mintmark sizes: Small, Medium and Large. Four obverse dies are paired with three Large O and one each Medium and Small O reverse dies. Mint State 1850-O dimes are considered R7 rarity regardless of mintmark size.

Plate Coin: Fortin 101, Fully struck and near continuous luster with few marks, a filler in PCGS registry set as primary example remains as NGC MS67 Star example.

In 1850, output of Dimes at the New Orlean Mint increased substantially to over half a million coins.  Even though this mintage is greater than other dates, such as the 1848, it is far less common.  In circulated condition, the 1850-O can be found with relative ease up to About Uncirculated.  Above EF, this date becomes very scarce.  Mint State examples are rare and the PCGS Condition Census drops to AU58.  The finest example is the amazing PCGS MS67 illustrated above, formerly in the Pittman, Simpson, and Gardner collections.

Jerry Fortin has identified seven different die varieties for this date, plus one worthy die state.  Fortin 103 has an unusually small mintmark compared to the other varieties of this date.
