The 1851 Half Dime is a great choice for the type collector because of its large mintage and its inexpensive cost. Like most Philadelphia mint products, the strike is usually excellent and the overall eye appeal is strong. Some examples show striations from where the dies were polished; others show clashing from die contact. The most commonly seen Mint State grade is MS64, with MS63 examples coming in a close second. Gems are semi-scarce and superb examples are very rare. PCGS has graded none above MS67.
