The comparatively high mintage has given collectors the false impression that this date is common. It is not, although VF and EF specimens are not particularly difficult to obtain. In AU condition the 1853 is very scarce and in uncirculated condition it is rare. Although the auction records show at least as many uncirculated listings for this date as for the 1847, 1847-O and 1849, I feel that the 1853 is considerably rarer than any of them in mint state. No proof Eagles were struck in 1893.
