Based on Population Report data, the 1853 Gold Dollar is THE most common date of the series - by far.  However, that does not mean that the quality of this date is anything special, as most of the graded coins fall into the MS62 to MS63 grade range.  Having said that, there are still hundreds of MS64 and MS65 examples from which to choose.  Moving from MS66 to MS69, the populations taper off significantly.  For type collectors, this date offers the best value for anyone looking for a superb Gold Doillar.
