1854 Braided Hair half cent, R2. This is the front-line example for the Furnace Run PCGS Registry Set of US half cents from 1793 to 1857 by Cohen Variety. This coin has been authenticated and graded by PCGS as MS64BN, CAC-certified as CHOICE for the assigned grade! I think that sticker got thrown on here quickly thanks to the wonderfully lustrous surfaces that feature very attractive sea green undertones. This coin was purchased on Ebay in 2010 in an NGC MS65BN holder for $1320, and when it crossed into this collection it ended up a point lower at MS64BN. Typically that 1-point difference is hard to split hairs over, and I had to look hard to find a tiny nick on each side. I am not going to tell you where I found them because they are well-hidden and quite tiny! This will be our "Where's Waldo" coin! Well-struck with full star centers and bold denticles on both sides, but the color and luster are the real stars on this coin. Looks like M2.0; no tiny dash left of base in 1; plain rust lump on top of I in UNITED. Purchased on Ebay in 2010 as NGC MS65BN for $1320 and the NGC label remains with the coin; Furnace Run collection.
