1856 Braided Hair half cent, R2. This is the front-line example for the Furnace Run PCGS Registry Set of US half cents from 1793 to 1857 by Cohen Variety. This coin has been authenticated and graded by PCGS as MS64BN, CAC-certified as CHOICE for the assigned grade! This coin was purchased from Barry Lame in 2011 as NGC MS65BN for $3500, but when it crossed into this collection it landed at PCGS MS64BN. I do agree with that grade, because a glass shows a tiny nick in the lower right field between the hair and stars, plus a very shallow planchet flaw inside the top of the wreath on the reverse. Color and condition-wise, this coin is certainly PLUS and well-deserving of the CAC certification. Golden chestnut brown with overflowing luster dripping from both sides. Sharply-struck early die state, M1.0 with perfect obverse with strong denticles, and a plain rust lump on top of I in UNITED on the reverse.
